Body Procedures

Improving body contour is an elusive desire of many women and men, especially those people with conditions that don’t respond to exercise or dieting. Dr. William McClure is a specialist in body contouring surgery who spends a considerable portion of his practice helping patients improve their shape and size. He performs safe operations with a fairly short recovery; operations that can please patients with the dramatic changes. The operations are done as an outpatient in our nationally certified office surgery center, typically under general anesthesia performed by board certified anesthesiologist (MD’s). These physician anesthesiologists use the newest medications and techniques to ensure a safe and gentle experience. Abdominoplasty, commonly known as the “tummy tuck,” is a safe effective operation performed to improve the abdominal contour by removing excess abdominal skin and fat, and by tightening lax abdominal muscles. Though the operation can be done on men as well as women, the most common reason for the loss of a good abdominal contour is pregnancy.

The much talked about Mommy Makeover, a term coined by the public, combines rejuvenation of a woman’s breasts and tummy to give her the firmer breasts and tighter abdomen she lost after breast feeding and pregnancy. These operations can be done at the same sitting with a fairly quick recovery. The changes can be quite dramatic and patients are very pleased with their new bodies.

Liposuctiona collection of body contouring operations developed in France in the early 1980’s, has become mainstream in North America. When performed in certified surgical facilities by skilled practitioners such as Dr. William McClure, the procedures are  safe and effective. When done on appropriate patients the results can be amazing. At Napa Valley Plastic Surgery our doctors utilize innovative techniques such as ultrasonically assisted liposuction (UAL) and power assisted liposuction (PAL).

Brachioplasty is done to improve the contour of the upper arm by removing extra skin and fat. This excess skin and fat can be an inherited trait, but it can also be the after effect of weight reduction.

Often our doctors are called upon to treat patients who have undergone dramatic weight losses of more than 100 pounds, usually following gastric bypass surgery. These patients can carry dramatic excesses of skin in the abdomen, breasts, neck, arms, thighs, back, and flanks. These patients are candidates for “full” Body lifts, a combination of procedures in which excess skin and fat is removed from many parts of the the body in the manner of a tailor altering an oversized garment.

Abdominoplasty, commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, is an effective and safe operation performed to improve the abdominal contour by removing excess skin and fat, and tightening the abdominal muscles. The procedure slims and tightens the midsection to reestablish a youthful waistline.

Abdominoplasty is done as an outpatient under general anesthesia in our office surgery center. Recovery is moderately quick. Most patients can return to light office work as early as two weeks. Patients are especially pleased since this operation corrects conditions they cannot correct on their own with exercising and dieting.  The operation does the following:

  • Removes excess abdominal skin and stretch marks that arise following pregnancies or large weight loss.
  • Tightens the “six pack” muscles that are pulled apart during pregnancy or large weight gain.
  • Removes all stretch marks that are between the umbilicus and pubic area, as well as moves stretch marks above the umbilicus down to a lower position.
  • Removes excess skin and fat of the lateral hip area (love handles), as well as the pubic area if needed.
  • Removes cesarean section or other lower abdominal surgical scars if needed.

Liposuction, also called lipo-sculpturing, is the most common cosmetic surgery procedure performed in the United States. Unwanted fat is removed through very small and inconspicuous incisions. Our surgeons perform this minimally invasive body contouring using advanced lipo-sculpture techniques, including power assisted cannulas and ultrasonic liposuction to allow for greater finesse in the results. Some procedures are performed under local anesthesia with light sedation. Others require general anesthesia. The “superwet” technique is used to eliminate blood loss and facilitate fat removal. This is a very safe operation with a fairly rapid and comfortable recovery.

Mommy Makeover

Pregnancy, child birth, and breast feeding all play a role in changing the mother’s body from the shape she was once happy with, to the current one with drooping breasts and a loose and bulging abdomen. Childbearing results in lax abdominal skin with stretch marks and weakness of the abdominal wall muscles. Breast feeding can result in loss of breast volume, as well as a sag or droop to the breasts. Exercise and dieting cannot undo the changes caused by pregnancy, so it is common for mothers to seek surgical assistance to return them to their youthful body. Dr. McClure offers what the public calls, the Mommy Makeover – a combination procedure that addresses both breast rejuvenation and abdominal contour improvement.

The breast and abdominal surgery can be done at one sitting in our office surgery center under general anesthesia. These are safe procedures with a recovery time the same as that of an abdominoplasty done alone.

The Brachioplasty, or arm lift, is a procedure designed to remove the excess skin and fat that can accumulate in the upper arm. It is a safe operation with a rapid recovery. This procedure is especially useful for patients who have lost a large amount of weight and for those whose arms have too much skin and fat despite working out. The stretched out skin cannot contract by itself leaving loose skin and fat hanging off the upper arm. A Brachioplasty takes away that extra skin and fat giving the arms a more desirable contour.

The operation is usually done under gentle sedation with local anesthesia. The recovery is comfortable. The procedure does leave a thin scar which extends from the axilla (armpit) to the elbow. This is well covered by the shirt sleeve but would be noticed when the arm is uncovered.

Body Lift

The “Body Lift” is a combination of contouring operations designed for the post bariatric surgery (“gastric bypass“) patient whose considerable weight loss has left them with large amounts of excess skin. The different tightening operations include neck lift, breast lift (male and female), tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift, buttock lift, and sometimes tightening of the flanks. A common combination procedure is called the “Belt Lipectomy.” This is an extended abdominoplasty where extra skin and fat is removed from the back and flanks, and the buttocks are lifted.

The Body Lift changes can be the most dramatic we see in plastic surgery. Even though some of these procedures leave noticeable scars, patients are extremely happy with the results. The operations are mixed and matched depending on the patients needs and preferences. Multiple procedures can be done in a single sitting. Except for the neck lift and arm lift, most require general anesthesia. Recovery is fairly comfortable.
