Breast Procedures

Dr. William McClure, one of the surgeons of Napa Valley Plastic Surgery, has been a San Francisco Bay Area innovator in cosmetic breast surgery. His patients over the years have been happy with the pleasing natural results of beast augmentation, breast lifting, and breast reduction, all common operations performed by Dr. McClure. These are safe operations with predictable outcomes and a quick recovery. Innovative techniques, new operations, and new materials have given today’s patients better options to obtain their desired results. The operations are done as an outpatient in our nationally certified office surgery center typically under general anesthesia performed by board certified anesthesiologist (MD’s). They use the newest medications and techniques to ensure a safe and gentle experience. Click on the links below to learn more about the different breast operations performed at Napa Valley Plastic Surgery.

Breast Augmentation is one of the country’s most common operations. It is done to increase breast size and to improve the breast shape by using breast implants. Dr. William McClure and his partner Dr. Rebecca Jackson were among the first surgeons in Northern California to utilize endoscopic surgery allowing them to do the operation through a small well-hidden incision placed in the axilla (armpit). The doctors were part of the long term study on the safety of silicone gel implants and can now offer their patients a wide variety of the safe and the most modern silicone gel implants available as well as the popular saline implants.

For patients with drooping breasts and low nipples Dr. McClures offer excellent options for Breast Lifting, the operation called mastopexy. This operation “lifts” the breasts and repositions the nipples to correct the drooping due to inheritance, pregnancy and breast feeding, age, and weight gain. For women with drooping breast that lack fullness, a breast augmentation can be done at the same time as mastopexy.

Excessively heavy and large breasts droop as well. This condition is associated with chronic back, neck and shoulder pain. Women with very large breasts are considered “over proportioned” and find it difficult to comfortably take part in many activities or to find appropriate bras and clothing. They can feel awkward or self conscious in certain settings when attention is directed to their breasts. This is especially troubling for teenage girls. The Breast Reduction operation both reduces the breast size and lifts the breast to correct the sagging.

Breast Reconstruction is the answer for women who have lost their breast or a portion of their breast in the treatment of breast cancer. The surgeons of Napa Valley Plastic Surgery work closely with the oncologists, radiation therapists, and breast surgeons in our communities to help women navigate this path to recovery. Our doctors have been recognized for their work with breast cancer survivors during this time when many plastic surgeons have chosen not to do breast reconstruction because of poor insurance reimbursements. Dr. William McClure and his associates accept all breast cancer patients into their practice regardless of their ability to pay or the type of insurance they carry.

Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation is a safe and common operation, performed to enhance breast size and to improve breast shape. This is accomplished by placement of breast implant, either saline or silicone gel filled, beneath the breast and chest wall muscle. It is done through a small well hidden incision in the armpit.

Breast augmentation is done as an outpatient under general anesthesia in our office surgery center.  Recovery is fairly quick and patients are happy.  Women choose to undergo the procedure for a variety of reasons:

  • To increase breast size in order to improve body proportions and aesthetics.
  • To correct the loss in breast volume following pregnancy and breast feeding.
  • To balance breast size when an asymmetry exists.
  • As an adjunct to breast reconstruction.

Mastopexy (Breast Lift)

Many woman inherit the tendency for drooping breast. We use the term ptosis for drooping. Pregnancy, breast feeding, and aging can accentuate the drooping. The Breast Lifting  procedure, also called Mastopexy, elevates the breasts giving women a more youthful shape. Breasts have drooping (sag) because there is too much skin. The lifting is accomplished by removing extra skin which requires leaving scars on the lower surface of the breasts. These scars are well hidden beneath clothing and swim wear. In most cases they become flat lines.

This is a safe operation with a rapid recovery. It can be done under sedation with local anesthesia or under general anesthesia. Breast Lifting is sometimes done in conjunction with Breast Augmentation to give a woman more fullness in the upper part of the breast and to increase size.

Breast Reduction

Many women inherit excessively heavy and large breasts. Even though the operation leaves scars around the areola and on the underside of the breast, this operation ranks highest in patient satisfaction. In most cases the scars diminish to become flat lines.

Breast Reduction is a safe operation with a quick comfortable recovery. It is performed under a general anesthetic either in our office surgery center or at Queen of the Valley Medical Center if the procedure is to be covered by insurance. Breast reduction surgery will occasionally  be covered by health insurance though every company requires that certain criteria be met. We are happy to work with our patients to obtain coverage, though in recent years the insurance companies have become very restrictive to the point that more than eighty percent of our patients pay out of pocket for the procedure, as they would for a cosmetic procedure. We are able to keep the costs down to a reasonable and affordable range.

Reconstruction may be performed at the same time as mastectomy or delayed until after the completion of cancer treatment. Options for reconstruction include breast implants or a TRAM flap where the abdominal skin and fat is used to recreate the breast mound. For women who will be undergoing a mastectomy, it is important to consult with a plastic surgeon prior to this procedure in order to review their reconstructive options.
